Pendulum

Formed during 2002 by three musicians from Western Australia with similar visions and musical backgrounds, Pendulum's mission has always been to pull together their production resources, ideas and influences from various styles of music, to create a new sound that they felt was missing from, to create a new sound that they felt was missing in dance music. The individual members behind Pendulum have been active in Perth's live music scene for several years: producer / vocalist / keyboardist Rob Swire and producer / bassist Gareth McGrillen played together in the acclaimed Perth band Xygen, while Paul ‘El Hornet’ Harding had been a veteran of the Perth DJ scene.

The Flaming Lips

Even within the eclectic world of alternative rock, few bands were so brave, so frequently brilliant, and so deliciously weird as the Flaming Lips. From their beginnings as Oklahoma weirdoes to their pop culture breakthrough in the mid-'90s to their status as one of the most respected groups of the 2000s, the Lips have ridden one of the more surreal and haphazard career trajectories in pop music. An acid-bubblegum band with as much affinity for sweet melodies as blistering noise assaults, their off-kilter sound, uncommon emotional depth, and bizarre history (packed with tales of self-immolating fans and the like) firmly established them as true originals.

Billy Idol

When his punk band, Generation X, broke up in 1981, oft-sneering singer Billy Idol moved to New York City and made the transformation from scrawny punk-rocker to slightly less scrawny new-waver. Released in 1981, his first solo-career EP, Don't Stop (Number 74, 1983), contained two hits, though it would take some time for either of them to pay off: His cover of Tommy James and The Shondells' "Mony Mony" (Number One) would finally chart in the form of a liver version in 1987, while a remake of Generation X's ode to onanism, "Dancing With Myself," wouldn't take off until 1983, when MTV placed its Mad Max-style video in heavy rotation.
